Custom Home Building Minnesota  ·  How It Works

The Stonewood Process

Stonewood’s custom home process runs in five phases: Architect, Design, Interior, Budget, and Construction. The client and architect meet every two weeks during Design Development, which typically runs 3 to 4 months before a formal budget is set.

How Custom Home Building Works

One Process, Five Phases, No Surprises

Building a custom home in Minnesota is the largest financial decision most Stonewood clients will ever make. The Stonewood process is built so that at every stage, from the first conversation to the final walkthrough, you know exactly what is happening, why it is happening, and what comes next. Every phase below is the same for every Stonewood client, on every Minnesota project.

The Five Phases of the Stonewood Process

01

Architect

Every Stonewood project begins with a structured discovery meeting rather than a sales call. Stonewood matches each Minnesota client with an architect suited to their site, style, and program, then leads a thorough conversation about lot conditions, budget parameters, and how the family actually lives, before any design work begins.

Typical Duration: 2 to 4 Weeks

02

Design

During Design Development, the client and architect meet every two weeks to review CAD drawings and refine the floor plan. This phase typically runs 3 to 4 months and is where the home’s layout, orientation, and overall architectural character are finalized before moving into interior selections.

Typical Duration: 3 to 4 Months

03

Interior

With the floor plan finalized, Stonewood’s interior team guides finish, fixture, and material selections through showroom visits and vendor walkthroughs. Every selection made during this phase is locked in before the formal budget is prepared, so the final cost reflects real choices rather than placeholder allowances.

Typical Duration: 4 to 8 Weeks, Often Overlapping Design

04

Budget

Stonewood prepares a detailed, line-by-line budget based on the completed design and finalized interior selections. The client reviews and approves this budget before a construction contract is signed, so there are no surprises once ground is broken on the Minnesota site.

Typical Duration: 2 to 3 Weeks

05

Construction

Construction runs from groundbreaking through the certificate of occupancy. Clients receive weekly photo updates, milestone-tied payments, and access to a dedicated project dashboard, so the status of the build is always visible, wherever in Minnesota the project is located.

Typical Duration: 12 to 18 Months
